It was a bit of a quirky one today! 8d set my hackles rising - WHEY no more sounds like ("we hear") WAY than Wales sounds like whales or weather sounds like whether - very poor...
I'm not sure I agree with you MarkRae.

I think Way & Whey do sound alike. Chambers also pronounces both words the same 'way'.
Whey, whether and whales have an aspiration at the beginning - the others don't.

Hold the back of your hand up to your mouth and say them all - if you don't feel the breath of air with whey, whales and whether then you're not pronouncing them correctly...
