20a is a dreadful clue! Scents and sense are not pronounced the same!
How come, Mark Rae?
Seriously?
Yes! Where I come from there is no difference, and I have never heard anyone make the distinction before (not in a lifetime of teaching even). Are you sure you're not imagining it simply because you know the "t" is there in the one? I'm not trying to be funny, or cheeky! Can't be settled with dictionary, either, as the pronunciation of plurals is not specifically given! I stand to be corrected, though. It reminds me (although it's different, of course)how I was told at school that "calm" and "harm" do not rhyme, although they certainly did amongst the "educated"(!!!) people of Sussex. And sorry btw I've only just got round to seing your response! No hard feelings, I hope: it genuinely interests me!
Well - where I come from there is a difference, but we have all got used to slovenly pronounciation (Lauranorder, AustraliarandNewZealand!), and I have to agree that it is a poor clue.

Re Scents...Where I come from there is a decided difference, as taught by teachers of the old school. We have all come to accept slovenliness on the radio (Lauranorder, AustraliarandNewZealand!!), but I have to admit that this is a very poor clue indeed.
Scents - sense

I am with Mark Rae on this one.
I'm not...
As in poetic licence you must allow for compilers licence.
"Mountain & molehill" spring to mind!
Pedantic comes to mind
At "fun-with-words.com" you will find CENTS SCENTS & SENSE listed as homophones!
