Tick on dog's eyelid?

Noticed just before our walk that there is a raised red lump on my dog's eyelid. I have looked as closely as I can and although I can see a dark mark, I am not sure if it is a tick or not. I have got a tick remover tool, which thankfully I have not had to use yet. A relative's dog recently had a tick on her eyelid and she took her to the vet where they put Vaseline on it and then pulled it off. I have had a quick look and the Lyme Disease site says not to use petroleum jelly, would I be able to use the tick remover in such an awkward sensitive place, if so, as I am not 100% that it is a tick, what will happen if I try to use the tick remover and it turns out to be a stye or ingrowing hair follicle or something. Any help or advice please, otherwise I feel a trip to the vet coming on.

Swollen ticks aren't usually red.

sorry maybe I didn't explain properly, his eyelid has got a raised red lump, similar to when humans get a stye, but within this swelling, there is a small dark mark, which could be a tick or could equally be a small scab, if he has knocked his eye on something in the garden or on his walks. This dark mark is very close to the bottom of his eyelid, so could maybe be something to do with a hair follicle which is why I am unsure whether to use the tick remover tool or not. I suppose basically I am asking can I do any damage by using a tick remover if it isn't a tick?
I'd go to the vet, jules, I wouldn't risk it.
yes you could - you may rip the skin if it isn't a tick.
I'd keep an eye on it, (no pun intended) and if it gets bigger definitely take her to the vet.
Well if its a tick it needs removing - and a vet job in such a delicate area, and if it isnt a tick it needs checking out. So vets it is IMO.
I would take your dog to the vet, be on the safe side!............hope all turns out to be fine!........sure it will be!.......
Yep, jules77 is right. You really should go to the vet asap IMHO. Hope all goes well.
I agree, ir you are worried then pop to the vet.

update on this, took my dog to the Vet who said it wasn't a tick, but that there was evidence he had been stung or bitten by an insect and that any redness or swelling should go down in a couple of days. So all is well, thanks to everyone who helped.
thanks for the update - hope dog recovers well
Good call....if you have believed it was a tick and tried to remove it, poor dog would have been on the ceiling
Oh good. All's well that end's well. Good title for a play that.
