I can't seem to get into this one very easily. I have few clues, each with a superflous letter. Answers for 31D and 15D (no clues given) would be a help I suppose, and would hopefully get me going on the rest. Or even the name of the person, or the theme. Any ideas pleeeeeeeeeeeease! Thanks.

Person recently deceased. This is a tribute.
31d and 15 dn are a tribute to his powers.
PS. You will need to fill in the 2 barred off boxes to complete his name. Alternate words in the perimeter give help for first and second name (4.4)
I no longer have the grid as I just put it in the envelope, so I am guessing you originally meant the two shaded words.
The 4 3 5 took some working out and is a clever play on words.

Thanks. I've just thought who it might be. (4,4?)Would it be (partly) the second half of 29A?
Don't have the grid. What was 29 ac?
Question Author
29A being danelaw?
Think you have it. Pluralised?
If you know your setters that is a key step. Good Luck!
Finally, in the perimeter you are looking alternately for people with the same first name and people who are associated with his second name, though one of these isn't a person.

Brilliant, thanks. I did a crossword from Sunday Times a few weeks ago based on the same person, and lo and behold a card came to say I was one of the winners. I've won a few crossword puzzles with small prizes, i.e. dictionary, bottle of wine, £20, but even so, have spent more on stamps than the prizes are worth, but its the satisfaction of working them out and sending them in.
There have been a few of these recently for obvious reasons. Let me know how quickly you come up with the 4 3 5. It took me nearly as long as the whole puzzle and only came in a pdm at the supermarket this morning.
Question Author
I'll let you know but it may not be very quick as I do not own my own computer and am doing this on my son's, but as soon as I have cracked it I will contact him and get him to put a message on. So I am at his mercy as to how quickly he does it for me, and at my own if I actually manage to crack it.
Good luck, and stay in line, whatever the answer may be.

I have almost finished it and have deduced all the perimeter (except one surname) and I'm sure I have the two things the missing letters spell out. As for the answer (4, 3, 5) I'm not sure. Could the initial letters be C.T.B? As for the thing he invented (7 letters?) did he invent this, as I thought this idea had been around for years. One clue I haven't got is 34D. Accompaniment to Greek poetry cut short by offence one breaks down (5) -beginning with an L. Also an R dropped from clue if I'm correct.

Can you help, thanks.
Not CTB. You need a "punny" phrase which would help if you wanted to come up with the last word. No, he didn't invent it, but tried to use it a lot in his work. Have another look at my last post. As for 34d It lies in Chambers so to speak.
I should have said "last two posts".

Thanks Antmark.

I've now solved the 4, 3, 5 clue. All good things come to those who wait, have patience.
Right on cue then. Well done.
