Hello EV N&C Wine Clubbers,
Well this week was a perfect example of how you should really read the rubric to ensure you enter the answers appropriately! I didn't and suffered badly with 2 of our bridge players!
I am staring at a completed grid, but have yet to come up trumps with the 16 letter indication of the suit! I thought there was some difficult cluing this week, resulting in some words that were alien to me!
Time for a preprandial Jamesons!

east - another word for rivals [as in 'to rival'] - outside 2 letter printer's term for 'nut' + c
Can anybody reassure me with the following. Are these misprints?

"Square of Tartan in seat lackin_ support.
Fly-trap without edges in_olved web spinning."

Very disconcerting when there are also mistakes with the alphabetical order of solutions to clues. Also

"Concerning opening regularly ObTaInAbLe"

Gives O_TIAL. Isn't this the indicator for SOUTH?
yes, ignore the typos and yes again. aren't you used to these offerings outside of the rigorous scrutiny of the listener team yet? inquisitor used to be the worst and then had a very good run until recently - but this is pretty bad for ev i'd say.
...of course the latter example is 'correct' as per the preamble [which i assume you already know but just thought i'd mention it].
.....and beware! for although you saw the typo there is another deliberate one there!
Thanks Bellabee. Wow! Not easy to forgive, especially when a missing letter in 4 clues is crucial to the solve. I was posting the query about the indicator for SOUTH, because elsewhere in the thread, somebody is confidently asserting that the solution for the SOUTH indicator begins with H. Does this mean they have cocked the whole thing up? I hope not. BTW, in which of the clues I posted is there a "deliberate" typo, "square" or "Fly-trap"?
Clue 23 "Dash back when taken for a ride" was not the determinant of SOUTH. Clue 31 "Concerning opening regularly obtainable" was.
Finally got there. With the Carte Blanche, difficult clues, typos, incorrect alphabetical order and misleading hints on this thread, this was the most difficult EV to date for me! Now for the Listener.
turast

If you re-read the post of haggis you will see that my reference to H was in connection
with the 11 letter word for the South side of the grid.
I 'confidently asserted' it because it was correct, and I believe you were at fault by assuming I meant the 'South' indicator.

I'm glad you managed to complete the puzzle which was a tricky one.

Cheers K
turast - i was giving haggis further hints to the 2 eleven letter words having understood correctly kayakaminas post - .my reference to a deliberate typo was to do with another of the dropped N S E W clues which just happened to be one of those that you noticed had a spelling mistake in it. i don't think there were any normal clues where solving was hampered by accidental spelling errors [and i don't think there were any misleading hints] glad you got there in the end though, cheers.
Kayakamina & Bellabee

Thanks tor your hints I have now completed the grid. I had incorrectly solved the second last clue and entered 'Tender' which completely threw me. I am now staring at the grid and still cannot see the four words (16 cells) to highlight.
hello haggis, i spent an age looking for the highlighting but i think that was because i was thinking too much about bridge. i think bobbycollins' assumption is accurate [difficult to give a hint without giving too much away].
I've looked at this in between clearing my team of examiners to mark and doing my own marking. Tricky isn't the word. I've 13 answers so far but have the north and south indicators. Might get chance to do a bit more. Happy solving to all of you EVers.
Sorry if I upset anyone. One of the problems of following threads within threads I suppose. Also it serves me right for desperately seeking scraps of help.
hello turast - no upset here, in fact i'm glad i could help a little. this thread [DocHH's opener] certainly helped me, and in the same vein maybe i should have spelled out more clearly my suspicion that you may have missed something in the preamble?anyway, we both got there in the end.
....actually i think what you were actually saying was - typos are confusing when letters have to be deliberately dropped for the solve - and you hadn't misread the preamble [my mistake, sorry] - misunderstanings are so common on these threads i find.
messed up 'misunderstandings' - how apt.
Kayakamina/Bellabee
Is there any symmetry in the highlighting?
think it's safe to say yes to that haggis.
Thanks Bellabee - got it at long last!
