What was a Greenwich Pensioner please? I have an ancestor (George Elston, Devon born 1786 and listed on 1851 senses with wife Sarah in Crediton) who is noted as a Greenwich Pensioner..... I think his occupation on the 1841 says show maker, but it's not clear ..... does the term Greenwich Pensioner mean he was in the navy? How can I find out more about him? TIA

Dotty ............. can I view any online records about George's naval career?
No I don't expect you can, the only record at the Nat Archives is the one craft lists. you should order that and see what it contains, it is probably his discharge from the reserve I think or maybe a pension award to his widow?
