What exactly does the "Blockbuster" refer to?

There are several explanations, so here goes :-
1. People waited in huge long queues which covered several blocks (english streets) hence the word Blockbuster.
2. Name given to large bombs used in WW2 which could destroy a city block, hence huge success - Blockbuster.
3. Film of book widespread popularity and acheives enormous success, hence Blockbuster. Hope this is some use to you.
