Cupboard love is term that originated in the early 20th century in psychology - see Freud and Behaviourist theories. Basically, it refers to the idea that infants become attached to those who satisfy their biological needs for nourishment. Theories and research by people like Harlow and Bowlby (in the late 50s and 60s) contradicted the theory - infants spent time with caregivers even when nourishment wasn't available or wanted. they did so for comfort. hope this was what you were looking for!
Modern meaning - you are only loved for what you can provide.
Often applied to dogs who will love anyone who gives them food and treats.
