What is the origin of the saying "Keep your pecker up"

Pecker goes back to the 1570s. As an expression for beak or nose. The americanism of using it for the male sexual apparatus is more recent.
As a descriptor of courage I think the derivation is similar to hold your head high...as in chin up, chest out. And it has been in use for a very long time, despite being very popular in Cholmondely-Warner style films of the 40s and 50s
