Yes the human tablet is OK for dogs.

I usually get mine from Holland & Barratt when they have a half price sale on (I stock up 6 months worth!):

I have had my dog on them for a few years now and it has kept him going and off any medication (he is 13 now).

I would start off on the smaller 250mg size.

My dog (Great Dane size 66 Kg) is on 2 500mg tablets a day.

As they are from a natural food source (mussles) it is safe to give them alongside medication. It is also difficult to overdose on them (just like eating alot of mussles!!!).

My rough suffered with arthritis from the age of around 7, she went on until she was nearly 14 with the help of Cosequin, which was originally prescribed by the vet, but it is available now without prescription, and far cheaper online. Ebay USA even cheaper.

I have also heard some great reports on Salmopet.

Be very careful when using vet prescribed medication - I hadn't realised until my dog passed away aged just 10 (quite young for his mongrel type) but he was on very strong medication but the vets all prescribe one strength of a certain pill. He also had arthritis. If I'd looked into it better he could have had the hydrotherapy etc to alleviate also.
Dorwest Herbs do a mix containing Glucosamine and Chondroitin which is good for joints. You could also try a Bioflow collar.
