The word 'lubber' is a corruption of 'lover', casued by lazy speech, which has passed into language. Sailors would tend to be scornful of anyone who suffered from sea-sickness, deriding them as somewhat inferior to the men of the sea - the insult being that they are 'land lovers' and can't take the rough and tumble of shipboard life.
