It simply means land-mammals and birds, because the former have fur and the latter feathers. For example, clubs for people who are interested in animals and birds are often called "fur & feather clubs". (The term "fin, fur and feather" is sometimes used for fish, mammals and birds.)
As opposed to Tar and Feather which is to cover someone in tar and then feathers and was practised in the Wild West.

Thanks for your answer geofbob. Can you tell me why Golf clubs & Fishing clubs have a match at Christmas time called the "Fur & Feather"?
I had no idea, but did a bit of research on Google. I found that "fur & feather" is a term used to describe some of the artificial lures (or flies) used in fly fishing, because these lures are made out of fur and feather; a fur & feather competition would, therefore, be for anglers fishing with this sort of lure. I'm sorry, but I could find no explanation for using this term for golf contests; but would hazard a guess that they might be contests where the prizes were game, such as rabbits, pheasants etc.
