Was it something to do with Turkish POWs who were put to work at Llanelli docks, and stayed behind after their release?

When I was very young-about 50 years ago- I was told that the people of Swansea started calling us Llanelli people Turks because the local brewery(Buckleys)had a logo showing a Welsh druid drinking from a cornucopia(horn of plenty)( rams horn)which to the ignorant Swansea Jacks looked like a Turkish dagger and that Llanelli people were a load of back stabbers.
I dont think this is true but just a bit of banter on rugby match days. |

in the past LLanelli did a lot of trading with the Turkish. Llanelli had a large tinplate and steel industry as well as agriculture and traded from it local docks to various countries but through the years the dock was closed and the industries closed and a lot of turkish traders stayed here

mostly trading but also as the turkish pow's were put to work at our docks

Avoiding intense speculation, and after long conversations with several elderly residents of Llanelli, it appears that the most plausible theory entails a George Best look-alike, Nigerian King who was exiled from Anatolia, during a tribal ritual after a rather nasty encounter with a fox, or maybe a wolf, while postulating wild theories surrounding scars and knife crime.
It is also widely claimed, that during his stay in Llanelli, King Tutma Bunnion II would often channel his pain through his saz. |
