Does it mean you got lucky or the opposite (you ran out of luck) I don't think its from the U.K.

It's a US saying and i've heard it used for both terms but it's more normally used to mean that you ran out of luck.
Sorry to oppose your answer sft42, It is US but it definitely does mean good fortune; as in 'we lucked out and got a good deal' - Just asked my American wife; born Miami, lived in 24 different states.. She oughta know..
24 states? did she like to travel or was she on the run? i feel like a nobody now, having lived in 1 county all my life (well apart from the period on Death Star, but i don't like to talk about that...)
