Most scientists believe that birds developed from reptiles. Since most reptiles to this day reproduce by laying eggs, it's rational to assume that the first bird-like creature came from an egg, too. It would then have laid eggs and - over millions of years, perhaps - birds as we know them slowly developed and produced different species. The present-day chicken is one of these, but - 'way back when - its great-great-grand-daddy almost certainly came from an egg. The egg pre-dated the bird, if you believe in evolution. Of course, fundamentalist believers in the Bible will say that God created all the creatures as creatures. In that case, the bird pre-dated the egg. Take your pick!

You could argue that since dinosaurs laid eggs millions of years before birds came along, and since we know (or believe anyway) that the bird is a creature that evolved from a more primitive species of dinosaur, that the egg came first.

..looking at it this way...going way back to the first life form and if all life came from that spontaneously generated single cell...then this could be call the egg.....so the chicken which eventually evolved from this would have to have come after the egg..........<G>

if the question is: what came first, the chicken or the chicken egg?

then the answer is this: the 'chicken' evolved from something else through evolution and natural mutation. no doubt, the most recent mutation of the current species to turn it into what we today call the chicken, then the chicken must have hatched from an egg that was not supposed to be a chicken egg, it may have been some other form of bird egg.

so the chicken came first in this instance, then every egg laid after this, was a chicken egg.

if the question doesn't specify what egg it's talking about, then of course the egg came first, the same type of egg that existed before chickens even evolved.
