How old does a man have to be before he can be called a bachelor??? Technically it is any unmarried man over 16 but that would be silly.

I was a spinster at 18 according to my marriage certificate, so why can't you be a bachelor?
Chambers Dictionary defines a bachelor (in this sense) as "an unmarried man". Today, a male is deemed to have reached the age of majority - ie manhood - at 18. It was 21 in earlier times. The answer to your question would, therefore, seem to be: "18".
