needle in a hay stack? I know what it means ,, But where did the saying originate ???

Tn the days of thatched roofs, the thatichers used large wooden needles to 'sew' sections of thatch together.

Because the haystack was normally nearby, it was often the case that a thatcher dropping his thatching needle would find it landing in the haystack, and having to be searched for.

Even though the needles are more than a foot long, they are wood, and therefore a similar colour to the hay, and you would have to search for a needle in a haystack.
