I recently withdrew 50 from an ATM machine and did not receive the cash. I took it up with my bank who took it up with the bank whose machine it was. They have replied that the machine did not show a surplus of 50. I did not receive the money but have had it deducted from my account. Any ideas? Thank You.

The only suggestion I can make is to check if there is any kind of security camera/CCTV aimed on this machine. If so, you may have a slim chance of them seeing that you didn't receive any money.
I know it's easy to be wise after the event, but I would have grabbed the nearest passerby and asked them to confirm that my purse was empty.
If they're saying there was no surplus, I don't think you have any chance of them giving you 50.
You could always complain verbally in a very loud voice in front of other customers.....or threaten to go to the press. That may make them back down, to avoid negative publicity.
Good luck.
I hope it wasn't a halifax machine cause you have no chance of getting any help in getting your money back.
Tell your Bank that you want to report a fraud - they will need to tell the other bank to check the machine's CCTV. If the machine is not over then I suspect that there has been a device attached to the machine that has taken the money. There are are more cases of this nature than you think.
