Ok as I write this now my mum and dad went out and the puppy has been crying for about 10 minutes. I've looked on websites about how to stop the puppy crying and they say you have to ignore it when it does this - do not reward the dog with attention for crying. That's what I'm doing, it works sometimes but right now it doesn't work. The puppy is still crying and it's in the hall on it's own but it doesn't seem to stop. I don't want to reward it by going back on what I've done. Can anyone help.. I don't know what to do :(

just leave it it will soon get the message but at this age I take it it's a very young pup it will cry for ages you really do have to persaveer though be strong think of the puppies well being it has to learn to calm down on it's own just like human babies do

I feel your right. I just let it in the living room and it stopped crying for a while so I went in and praised it, gave it lots of attention. It's hard when my mum and dad are here though because they always say "No" when it cries and it's kinda inconsistent with how I know it should be done.

Thanks for replying so quickly :)
Just keep leaving it for longer and longer. Plenty of fuss when you get back.

Next door to us has a dog that just barks pretty much all the time they are out. It really p******s us off. Please don't let your dog get like that!
that's what they do - it's hard to ignore them I know, but you have to.
When we got our current dog it used to cry and run at the kitchen door (where it was locked) at night. He learned soon enough that we hadn't left him for good and would be back.

lol that's what I'm bothered about, neighbours shouldn't have to hear it. It's quietened down now :)

some sites say that leaving a radio on low provides some comfort if an animal has to be left alone for any period of time.
Question Author
That's what I thought. It seems to cry more when it's quiet in the house. I usually have radio on and it does help. :)
I always leave the tv on when i go out and that seems to work, but the only thing to do is to keep at it with the praise when the dog is quiet after you leave it. It will work eventually.
Make sure the puppy has been fed and has something to chew on - a bone or a hide chew or a pigs ear will keep it occupied.

If you are there, why does the puppy have to be left on its own in another room?

Have you tried a cage? It will be able to go in there to sleep and it will know it is safe when you have to leave it.

i put it in hall because it was crying. when it was in kitchen (where compis) it started crying. I let it in the living room, then it stopped so I went in and gave it praise after like 5 mins.
Hi has the puppy got some toys to play with.? I have alwas given my dogs different toys so they can play. don't give them too many toys and change them over every now and again so they don't get bored with them. I also live my radio on when out.
Question Author
Yea he's got a few toys but he'll only play if I play with him. He doesn't play with many of them though.
a loud ticking clock is also meant to help

Thanks for all your responses. Very helpful :D
I just noticed a leaflet about this in our local RSPCA shop. Hope you can get one!
puppies often settle down if they have a hot water bottle that has been wrapped in several pillowcases. They see it as another dog, so usually cuddle up to it and go to sleep. Make sure the pup has water and has been fed before you leave it to its own devices though. Also try to make sure it is walked or taken into the garden to relieve itself about 15 - 20 min. after finishing its food. Then let it settle down and do not go comforting it. It will soon learn that there is a time when it is ok to be left alone. A soft toy is always good too leave with the pup too. Best wishes for you and your new friend.
puppies also like old socks stuffed into a sock amd tied at the end. it is soft and they love throwing it around.
