Not a lot of people do paper style crosswords anymore Sandy.I used to love doing my Guardian and Daily Mail crosswords,i have now got an online subscription for both and cant do their crosswords anymore.I am sure there are a lot more like me.

Why can't you do their crosswords online, ynnaf?

For many crosswords if you just type the clue in google search several sites will come up with one (or several) answers.

Doesn't work for all & you sometimes need to type "clue" after the clue.

My go to site is danword.

Not really the same anymore, barry.I preferred the pen and paper type of thing.

Margo, LIK,Scorpiojo, Captain and me are still here and will help with crosswords if we can

... and me!!

I suspect it's at least partly because several sites give lists of answers to whole puzzles at once.

With that in mind, davebro, I hope you don't rely too much on that site, they frequently give incorrect answers.

I believe that between them, all of AB's contributors are capable of solving - & explaining - pretty much any clue.

Yes,Mr l I King you seem to be the best at this sort of thing.Have you ever been on any of the TV quizzes or game shows?

Hi ynna - no, I've not been on TV, I suspect nerves would get the better of me! 😵

Yes,LIK,okay on here, but not in front of ten million people looking through their televisions at you.

ynnaf, you could print them out

Of course,barry,thanks for your help.

Crossword answer sites are useful whenever you finally give up on a clue, or even if you merely want confirmation on the spelling of the answer. Where they fall down though, is explaining how the apparently totally unrelated clue & answer has been paired by the crossword setter. Here you can ask.

I used to ask - and give answers - here occasionalyl about the Sunday Express Skeleton (which doesn't feature on any other answer sites I've found).

Stopped buying the paper when they uppped the price & effectively ditched the prizes.☹

Got the £25 runners up prize a couple of times.

Crosswords used to be a thriving part of AB and the regulars really welcomed me when I joined and helped me begin to understand cryptic crosswords.

I'd love to know where sites like danword get their answers.  The other evening at 11:30 I got unexpected access to the Daily Mail's online cryptic crossword for the following day, and danword already had all the answers!

Also, what do these sites gain from doing all that work?

And then you overtook me in our BA league table..🤗😁

😂😂 absence made the heart grow fonder Retro

Using those sites means the asker doesn't have to put up with those sarky, barbed comments about the number of questions they've asked especially if there is a prize.
