Has years/decades of salting the roads in the winters had any effect on the growth of hedges and wild plants. Has anyone done a study on this?

Yes, the Swedes have done a lot. http://www.vti.se/nordic/2-99mapp/299sw2.html would be a start but you may have to go to a research library to find the good stuff.

thanks for that. so damage in Sweden is a real issue. why are we not doing anything about it?
and what about the snails, poor mites lol
