I guess this is not a question which I can get straight from you but how many of you.. I mean your bodies, jumpstart or kinda spasm right before you fall asleep? My boyfriend does it ( maybe without his knowledge) whereby his finger will flick, his legs will jerk and sometimes even one of his shoulders will jerk right before he starts snoring (which indicates that he will not answer anymore when I ask "are you asleep yet?"). I'd just like to know if this is normal. It isn't posing any problems just yet.

Its called a myoclonic jerk...I always get them so I looked into it. Its when your experince a small dream possibly where you are falling and your body reacts to it just as you wake up!!

thanks very much. I think that's it. He has it like every night before he sleeps and if he doesn't, I know he's faking sleep =)

Hi Gnisy,

Just to tell you a funny story about this exact condition... I used to own a sunbed salon years ago, when it was standard practise to go on for 30mins(whereas now you go on for about 3 mins!) Anyway, my boyfriend at the time used to have these jerks (and no doubt still does!) After 10 mins lying in the lovely heat of the sunbed, he began to fall asleep....his leg jerked so ferociously, that it smashed down onto the perspex that he was lying upon, and promply smashed it in two!!

My husband tells me my whole body jumps up sometimes. This normally happens just as I'm nodding off and quite often dream about falling off a kerb on my bike or tripping down stairs! Someone did tell me once, it was where your soul has left your body and the re-entry is a bit dodgy!!????

LOL. As violently as he can jerk into his sleep, I don't think he can break anything he's lying on. Le Chat>> I hope nothing bad came from the perspex breaking apart from a few tee-hee-hee with the salon owner

woofgang>> thanks for the skinny on site. Very interesting.

emmay>> dodgy entry? I thought it was a soul exit. When I was younger, my friends told me that the jerks were caused by our souls tripping over a drain around the home. Plus, that is also the reason why one should never wake a sleep-walker because if the soul does not return quick enough, the person dies! I never tried it out though.
I get it sometimes. It is normal. I was reading about it only about a week or two about why we do it. I cannot remember properly what it said but it said something like because we are starting to relax like we are falling our brains kicks in to try and save us, well something like that.
