Hi there I have a really bad dental abscess I am on amoxicillin 3 times a day 500mg quite a high dose I started last night any idea how long it takes to work I am in a bit of pain I started them at 4pm yesterday I thought they would have started to work by now ??

That would be an antibiotic not a painkiller.
(Although that stuff gives me, personally, major pain).
Antibiotics work over days; finish the course.
usually about 24 hours in my experience and then it starts to relieve slowly, depending on the individual and the severity of the infection.
It will vary from person to person but as an old hand at abscesses for me I'd expect a good reduction in pain within 24 to 36 hours and a continuing improvement from then. Make sure you finish the course even if you are pain free.
Well, antibiotics don't work like painkillers (in a short time)...it'll be a few days before you notice an improvement IMO.
...take painkillers as well as the antibiotics...
I find it can take up to 48 hours for the infection to begin to resolve and the pain to reduce, been there a few times. As well as pain relief meds, applying heat or cold to the outside of the affected area can be helpful, sometimes one works better, sometimes the other.
