Cam 73 Schadenfreude. Instructions

Just had this term's CAM magazine, and as usual am baffled by the instructions even before I start to solve the clues. When it says that "across items consist of non-overlapping clues" and gives the word-count as between 18 and 23 letters, how can I fit the answer into the 12x12 grid? Sorry I can't give more details...you really need the magazine to understand my query.

Hope someone's going to read this some time:
I now have all the down solutions, 7 of the 10 across ones, and I follow in which order to enter them.Shall no doubt need a few prods on the last steps though. Anyone out there?
