Have successfully removed AVG anti virus and installed the above. Have also ran the malwayre thinmabob. But my patience is being tried in that the system is so slow either in typing this up or going from site to site.

Anything more I can do - what is causing this slowness. Thanks

How old is the computer? How much stuff do you have installed?
Is your machine generally slow or just the browser when you are accessing the internet?

where would or how do I get Firefox - thanks
I can't imagine any browser would slow your computer down the way you describe.

Google Chrome is your Search Engine
What Operating System do you have ??
Windows 7, Windows 8 ???

windows XP
a browser wont make your comp slow more likely you have not downloaded the avg uninstaller to get rid of the prog completely and try "cc cleaner "run it for crap and registry probs its good its safe

Browsers can slow down a computer's functionality. I use Firefox as my default Browser, but also have installed Internet Explorer, Sea Monkey and Safari. The fastest is Safari, with Firefox next, followed by Sea Monkey with Internet Explorer being the slowest. There was a time I was using Google Chrome on occasions, but have removed it as being a bug breeding browser.

Make sure you have completely un-installed AVG but please, please, please, Do Not become involved with CCleaner which could, if Not used extremely carefully, do irreparable damage to your computers Registry and even render your computer beyond further use. Far better to give your computer a Scan with the Avast which you have installed and then a quick Scan with the free version of Malwarebytes. :-

dont talk crap hansback cc cleaner its a highly respect programme not the first time you have ranted about cc cleaner
Ok my damned browser has just slung away all I wrote when IT opted NOT to go to a new tab as asked prior to my web search, and the back button decides NOT to bring it all back again. I do hate these PCs sometimes.

I'll try again.

It may be that you PC is running out of resources, and you only notice when you try to use a web browser. It may be useful to mention what memory you have installed, and what the size of your C: drive is, and what free space it has left. (Less important these days but running a defrag programme may help a little).

Firefox can be obtained from the Mozilla website, but if your PC is that slow it may be a painfully long task. https://download.mozilla.org/?product=firefox-stub&os=win&lang=en-US

In addition it may be useful to test your broadband speed. Try here. www.speedtest.net
@ivor4781.......I am Not wishing to enter into a contest with you on the issue of Registry Cleaners. Furthermore, I dislike your attitude and suggestion that I am talking 'crap'.

Hi Jenny, I've used Avast for about 14 years now and it's always been brilliant. However. I recently got a message that "Avast couldn't connect as all points where in use", what ever that meant!!!
Consequently I had to uninstall the original Avast and reinstalled it again but unfortunately I didn't remove the tick in the box which also loaded Google Chrome as well as Avast and everything went haywire and very very slow.
I finally realised what it was and removed Google Chrome and all the other crap which downloaded at the same time, just leaving Avast downloaded which now works brilliantly once again.
Suggest you remove Google Chrome and any other bits and pieces you may have downloaded in error.
Incidentally, I am also with XP. and Internet Explorer which are both fine for me.
hans
using cc cleaner in its default setting cannot do any harm to your comp either cleaning the crap or scanning for registry issues
you seen to have a problem with this prog, i haven't or with the many comps i looked after for friends for many years
