I think it could be either seek (look for) or seem (seam of coal). Letters I have are S_e_

This is normally such a simple crossword, but this clue doesn't seem to make sense.

Thank you both, but what does 'look for' mean?
The definition is 'look' which = SEEM
'say' means 'sounds like' so 'seem' sounds like a seam of coal
