Did anybody see the first of a series "Starting Out?" a programme and series following the life of 4 newly qualified doctors in hospital.
Two women and two men.

First young lady was attached to a GI unit and had to tell a patient that she had terminal cancer......the female doctor then left the room and burst into tears.

Second young lady on A&E giggled to her friends after doing a rectal examination.

First male doctor was about 20stones in weight.

Second male ....on a Respiratory Unit moaned about the writing up of case notes.

In my opinion if these are examples of the future doctors, then we are seeing a fall in professional stature.

Oh yes - wouldn't miss it.
Very informative.
Particularly the male patient with a toilet brush stuck up his bum. (He slipped on a wet floor and the brush 'accidentally' inserted itself into his rectum.

I love this sort of thing (programme) ;-)
<<First young lady was attached to a GI unit and had to tell a patient that she had terminal cancer......the female doctor then left the room and burst into tears.>>

I'm sure she will toughen up in time.

<<Second young lady on A&E giggled to her friends after doing a rectal examination.>>

I'm sure this will change in time

<<First male doctor was about 20stones in weight.>>

And?

<<Second male ....on a Respiratory Unit moaned about the writing up of case notes>>

I'm sure it's not the only profession that moan about some aspects of it. I think the police moan about all the form filling as well.
True Sqad not like when we were doing our training. When I first started nursing training I had to wash and scrub floors. Also wash nappies by hand .You jumped to attention when the ward sister appeared. You daren't have a hair out of place or below your collar. Not like that now a days .Giving my age away lol.
Didn't see it, but from your descriptions, In my opinion these are the sort of behaviours I'd expect from folk just starting out inthe profession. Wasn't that your experience when you started ? You seem to be being a little harsh on them. They'll get used to it.

<<First male doctor was about 20stones in weight.>>

A good advert for the dangers o obesity for his patients?

<<Second young lady on A&E giggled to her friends after doing a rectal examination.>

Change in time?..I hope so, unprofessional behaviour

<<Second male ....on a Respiratory Unit moaned about the writing up of case notes>>

Accurate note taking is essential, particularly should there be subsequent medico.legal implications.

No I was not impressed.
There was a series like this a few months back on BBC 3. Is it set in Newcastle?

wendilla....exactly.... wouldn't go on a Consultant's ward round without a suit, shirt and tie.

Nowadays even some Consultants look scruffy.
Maybe not, Sqad, but were you any better at that stage of your career? Mindst you times were different then, I suppose.

mike........yes.
Have seen it then. The fat one fails his surgery exams.

Welshy....I am comparing like with like.....newly qualified in my time compared with newly qualified as depicted on TV.
Yes, it's the same programme, now being shown on Beeb 1.

Bytheway sqad - I found the overweight doc rather attractive. But then I am a bugger for men who play rugger....
He's not a good advert, I agree. That doesn't mean he will be a bad doctor....

Sticking your finger at someones bum for the first is obviously going to make people react differently. I'm sure it's a case of getting used to it...

Writing up notes....so he doesn't like it. Doesn't mean he's not doing it correctly.
Must agree we used to have a laugh. But I was just stating what I had to do when I started. I can remember we were walking a gent up the ward and his pyjamas fell down. What do you think us 18 year olds did. Red faced .Nearly choked and had a good giggle when we got out of the ward.

salla LOL
