I am looking for an insect book for my seven year old son. He is bright (not just saying that) and has a quick mind so it has to be engaging to look at, with lots of detail but not like a text book. I don't really get any chance to browse book shops in peace at the moment or I would go and have a look myself. Thanks

Sherrard, there's an I-Spy Insects (in the I-Spy series) - one selling on eBay at the moment for £1.50 - it's an old book (says on the front it cost a shilling when new!) but the insects won't have changed much, I imagine...?

Thanks for that - went to look at it and there is a Collins Gem book which he might like (it helps you identify bugs). I will show the choices to him tomorrow and let him choose his own.
There a Michelin Feild Guide to Insects too - it says for children and young adults.
I'm not suggesting this instead of anything which you've thought of (because you're already looking at some of the best titles for your son's age) but, when I was a kid, I loved the "Observer's" series of books. Much of their content was probably largely 'above me' when I first got the books but I found them great works of reference and, as the years went by, I kept reading them to study the subjects in more detail. (I've still got several of them!)

Alas, they're no longer in print, but secondhand books are sometimes just as good as new ones. For £2.27 (including postage) you might like to consider this as a bonus book for your son:

Sher - a bit late with this, but if he (or any of your other kids) are interested in nature then I thoroughly recommend this. I grew up with it and I never had my nose out of it, especially after nature walks.
