If its traditional for princes to become Dukes when they marry, why did Prince Edward become the Earl of Wessex?

He will be created Duke of Edinburgh when the title reverts back to the crown.

And apparently, according to Wikipedia, it was at his own request that he should be given the title Earl of Wessex, after seeing the film 'Shakespeare in Love' in which Colin Firth played that role. Edward had previously been in line to be created Duke of Cambridge or Duke of Sussex.

he was made an earl as a precursor to his OBE. He will then become an ear-lobe.
