Christians don't name boys Jesus so I wonder why Mohammed is the most favourite boys name.
It is the first or second amongst all boys names not just restricted to the Islamic world.
You would think being that he is supposed to be the last and greatest of all the prophets his name would be revered not giving to any Tom Dick or Harry or should I say Muhammed , Mohammad or Mahammed.

rojash Yes I suppose you are right // Jesus (who, of course wasn't a prophet, but one aspect of God). // However the muslims revere Jesus as a prophet but then what is a prophet ?
One who foretells something maybe but what did Muhammed foretell ? He defined Gods rules for living and what he was suppose to do but did he actually foretell anything. ?
You may call "Abdullah" as Muhammad's second name because in Arabic traditions Father's first name becomes child's second name. And on numrous occasions if people asked Muhammad his name he replied by saying Muhammad Bin Abdullah or Muhammad Ibne Abdullah.
Actually Huderon, that's absolutely right. Now you come to mention it I remember a bit of statistical fixing.
Does 'Bin' mean 'son of'? Like Mac in Gaelic?
yes sandy, it does. So the name which naomi's detailed gives Mohammed's family history.
And people who say that word Allah was never heard of before Muhammad obviously do not know the variants of Arabic. You only have to look at his father's name and you can see it there. Abdulla or sometime written as Abdallah.
I think that the Hebrew equivalent is Bar, just as the Welsh is Ap, the Irish O' and the old Norman/English Fitz. The Russian equivalent is a suffix, ovich for a boy and ovna for a girl.

Naomi I dont understand //Since 'Allah' was unheard of before Mohammed // Do you mean the word Allah or God which I believe was important to Abraham who founded the Arab and Jewish tribes. I forget their word for God but it was something like Yashmeh
Agree, keyplus - when Jibreel appeared in Mohammed's dream, Mohammed was taken aback but did not suddenly discover the existence of Allah, God was already known of by that name.
Yahweh, modeller?
Oh, good try Keyplus - but not quite the same. ;o)
Since we're talking about pre-AD600 Arabic here, I don't think we can afford to be pedantic about spelling (much as I'd like to) - not much was written down in those days, we are after all only anglicising the spelling of the Arabic tongue, and there are many ways of recording the same set of sounds.
Modeller, No, I don't mean that, but as I said, it wasn't quite the same. Mohammed was supposedly the messenger of Allah, rather than the messenger of Yahweh.
Oh ... and, yes, they are one and the same....
In Russian the second name (patronymic) is always derived from the father's name and Russian people, from the highest to the lowest are addressed formally by their first and second names. Thus a street sweeper in Moscow, on being introduced to the Russian Prime Minister, would address him as Vladimir Vladimirovich (Vladimir, son of Vladimir) and not Mr Putin.
But how (and how much) are you sure whay Jesus (pbuh) or prophets before him called him? After all there are no real records.
Mike, that isn't unique to Russia. It's the case in very many cultures.

Keyplus, there are no records at all - apart from the gospels - and they, like any other religious documents, can in no circumstances be considered authentic records.

Bedtime. Night all. x
Nite naomi x
In Bible even (Mark 15:34 and Mathew 27:46) what Jesus called God "Eloi" 0r "Eli" sounds more like Allah than Yahweh or Yashmeh.
That was Aramaic, keyplus
