We knew we were in for cuts by this Government but to see students lighting fires outside Tory HQ and smashing the windows of Millbank Towers in London is, quite frankly, sickening, it's like looking at mob rule, what they expect to achieve by their thug-like actions, I don't know!

I certainly don't agree with violence-and I am a child of the '60's. But it's about time the youth of this nation have found SOMETHING to get het up about. They've been a rather apathetic bunch during the 20 years I've lived here.
Yes-everyone needs to put this into perspective...I've only just put the news on,and the students I've seen interviewed don't look like anti-government thugs.

Pasta, I have two nieces at uni - and one of them, like many students now, simply isn't bright enough to be there. Another niece dropped out because she didn't know ‘what they were talking about', and I know several people who would tell similar stories. In this fake‘one size fits all’ society, the acquisition of a university place is far too easy. Perhaps if university had remained the preserve of the truly academic our young people, regardless of social status, would still be enjoying the very real benefits of free education.

Naomi-my daughter has just graduated with a Msc Chem....I would never call her an academic-yet she achieved what she did via very hard work.....(and a lot of boozing-we are being honest here!) But you are right-it's not a right.Yes -more should have the opportunity-but they need to be very sure that they are willing to put in the effort.

As for free education-I really do not see that as workable. The money needed to pay professors in a very competitive world market has to come from somewhere-and I doubt the taxpayer is willing to foot the bill in this country.

hya Yankee, I have seen on the news nearly all afternoon it is mob violence, and I do feel a certain amount of sympathy for the many thousands of peaceful demonstrators but the ones that will hit the headlines will be those who have comitted the violent acts and to answer your point, Bills son was at University so I have seen what that is like first hand, my second point was, a spokesman for the Met says they didn't see this happening and will be better informed next time, a blind person would see there was a mindless faction, hell bent on disruption

don't know why they were demonstrating in the first place..nobody ever gave me something for nothing since leaving school.. students nowadays think its normal to do 3 or 4 yrs studying then take a year out..so where do they get the money for that? I started working in a foundry when i was 15 yrs and 3 months old and have been lucky enough to have always been employed.. If they can't afford to go to college, then hard luck the worlds a hard place.. If you got any go in you you will get on fine.. i've got 4 daughters and they all earn around the same amounts of money 2 have been to uni 2 hav'nt.. uni is'nt everything..

Pasta, my generation got mostly free education because my parent's generation (many of whom missed out thanks to the Depression) thought it was a good thing and were willing to pay for it.

I am happy to do my bit in passing the same privilege on to the next generation.

And I couldn't care less if they dare to spend some of their money on drink. So did I.

I can't say that I'm sorry to be honest - on one hand it's totally unacceptable to destroy property and set fire to things but on the other the Lib Dems can't just be allowed to u turn on everything in their election manifesto without any sort of backlash like this- that's naieve in the extreme of them but then maybe both things are why they had fewer votes than anyone else and thus why they are unsuitable for power- the Tories have always been a bunch of elitish imbeciles you expect it of them, but the anger towards the Lib Dems- wholly justifiable.

I'm sure the Police/Security services have an idea who these demonstrators are.
Serious students are appalled at what happened. These so-called intelligent people shoud have realised by now, particularly after the last Government. You don't get something for nothing.

Well, if their degree is in something like Art Appreciation gran, I don't hold out much hope.

I think whoever on here said the professional troublemakers were involved in this is absolutely right - and I think B00 is right too. Of course the unions have the little man's best interests at heart! Not!!

Naomi it is scary just how many folk see it as acceptable behaviour,when they have been interviewed, the majority there today were wanting to protest and it was their right to do so, these eejits have ruined for them

I know Bobbi. I agree with you totally. I thought it was absolutely appalling. The thing is they have a good case, but if they carry on like this they will lose public sympathy.

and that is not fair, there was many a student there today who wanted to protest peacefully, infact the majority did, I was appalled by the girl via phone who was neither a student nor a lecturer, who got paid for this sickening violence, she did it full time, her words!!
