Cay Couple Refused a B&B Bed

I read over the weekend that the B&B owners who refused to allow a gay couple to stay have received over 10,000 abusive and threatening phone calls and emails.

Ironic, isn't it, that they have been the subject of this amount of intolerance?

I personally feel the B&B owners were in the wrong, not for their beliefs (which they perfectly entitled to hold), but because they unlawfully discrimanted aganist the gay couple - but even so, has their discrimination warranted the level of abuse, threats of violence and intolerance they have received?

For those like myself who have not read the article, & yes I do believe they were being discriminated against but they were bound to have some sort of abuse but I didn't realise how much

That's natural enough seeing as you're heterosexual - there's no law that says you have to 'like' homosexuality. But you do have to tolerate it (which this woman didn't), just like I have to tolerate campus communists regardless of how much they get under my skin.

That's not some kind of air-headed ideological imposition - it's just realism. It's the only way a diverse and pluralistic society can possibly work in the modern world - everyone grudges a little compromise to receive it in kind. I can't throw a brick at certain members of my Union, and this woman can't discriminate against sections of the population whenever she likes.

Firstly, this couple do not deserve abuse, which rather empties the high moral ground about discrimination and hostility.

However, I think they are wrong to object to guests on the basis of their sexuality. If you wish to run a guest house and impose such rules, then clearly advertising it as a 'Christian' establishment ought to send out the kind of message this couple wish to convey.

But of course, they would get very little business this way. if you go into the hotel business, then you must accept guests in all shapes and sizes, creeds and coloure, and yes sexual preferences. To infer that you object to your guests' perceived bedroom behaviour in advance seems bigotry of the highest order - who would want to stay there anyway - gay or straight?

For me - Social services should with no exception/excuses review ALL applications made to adopt - and rather than just seeing "criminal record" and then just very quickly deciding that he/she/they can not be classed as suitable - look at each case on its own individual merits and consider after looking at every single factor of both good and bad
