Further attacks on the social lepers, or sensible measures? I must admit I do feel sorry for the kids I see in the backs of cars, in a safety seat of course, gasping for breath, getting gassed by cynide and 500 other poisonous gases, why do smoking parents think so little of their children?

im with doc whilst i do not condone the smoking around children we must be realistic smoking is a habit thats been going on for hundreds of years, kids will never ever totally escape from being immune to smoke.
We must do as much as possible to protect them but you cant put them in cotton wool and bubble wrap FACT !!!!
LOL zzxxee ...

If we did wrap children in bubble wrap ... would it protect them?

I think they might suffocate !
jj, i thought the take on it was that there has been a large (evidential fact) rise in asthma and respiratory diseases in children, of which passive smoking is a direct contributor.

perhaps if more consideration was given to the potential effects of passive smoking (like any airborne toxin) then maybe, just maybe, less harm would come to kids in these environments, less burden on the health service and a healthier generation will follow.

the fact that people are blatantly disregarding the potential for passive smoking to cause harm in others, is swinging me towards the 'ban' option.

many above advoicate encouragement. NO, smokers had up till recently to get onside but no they considered it their right to make us all partake in their disgusting habit. It was only when forced they did anything about it. This will be no different.
Irrespective of what the scientific reports say it's still not nice for children to be in a smoky atmosphere. What I object to is the suggestion that it will be banned in our cars and homes. Whilst I have no intention of smoking in either, its the constant erosion of privacy and this wretched nanny state.
smoking is a habit thats been going on for hundreds of years !. Give over XX no ones that old.

I don't know, Ankou.

You see, all these propositions are put forward as facts, and yet the paediatrician in that article says ...

... he is NOT aware of ANY studies to support those "facts".

Personally, I think smokers are a pain in the butt. I have a pal who smokes and, when we go for a drink, we have to stand shivering away in the beer garden (we call it "the naughty corner"). But, even so, I would be concerned about any further inroads being made into their freedom.
Lets ban children from been taken to school in cars !. Make them take a school bus or even walk. Even healthier for them.
LOL Dusty x

In fact, instead of banning people from smoking in places where there are children ...

... let's ban children from places where people are smoking.

Job's a good 'un.

Hang on ...

Most of the people who smoke in public places ARE children !!!

i don't agree with smoking in cars full stop let alone when kids are around but i think a ban is daft, how would you enforce it, not many people take a blind bit of notice of the mobile ban (cheers to the guy in the passat who nearly ran me over this morning)
I did get hit by a bloke on a mobile. On a pedestrian crossing...!!
Your quite right JJ ban kids from pubs Why should I have to put up with other peoples children when I want a night out ( Passive kids )
How would this ban work? Using mobile phones whilst driving was banned but idiots still do it - I can't see how it would be policed.

Our local health authority are building two smoking shelters costing around £80,000 at two hospitals in this area. There has been local uproar in the papers but if it means not wading through endless dog ends at the entrance to the hospital, then every little helps, as they say.

I am a non smoker.
Ban smoking around children????

The number of children I see smoking, It should be ban children from smoking around adults.
let smoking in pubs be at landlords choice if you want to go to a smoking pub go
if not go to a non smoking one simples !!!!
