Tragic Fire in London

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/london/8133 871.stm

I hope if this is found to be arson that the person responsible for these lives lost is given a very long prison sentence, not just a slap on the wrist as seems to happen so often lately.
May all the deceased rest in peace.xxx daffy654 (Sat 02:40 04/Jul/09)

Horrible news daffy. Those type of buildings should be built with better safety features.

I'm concerned that the fire started in a stairwell as that indicates arson. It's a terrible tragedy for the families involved and I hope the police and fire services get to the bottom of this very quickly.

The police are treating the fire as suspicious.
I did initially think it must be because as julnar says it started in the hall/communal area.
I just can't imagine how terrifying it must have been for those trapped, and the grief and anger of those who lost loved ones.

The news reports I have seen say it started in a flat not a stairwell.

It is being treated as suspicious though.

So much for strict building regulations. Houses and flats must be built to withstand the fire going to adjacent properties. Try getting permission to build an extension, you have to have fire doors, means of exit for 3 stories or more, etc. Something sadly lacking when they passed these plans.

What about the dozens and dozens of people dying in the world like in the middle east etc ?

These appear to be very old flats so maybe the regulations weren't as strict when they were built.

What about them supastar?
I do have sympathy for them but that is a seperate issue and is not relevant to this news story.

The "Tragic Fire" is nothing compared to the people dying in the world today

.Anyway, hope the deceased RIP.

I don't even want to think about how the relatives feel who have lost their families in the violence around the world today...

Supastar, why don't you post another message to state your point instead of trying to trivialise the deaths of these 3 children and 3 adults in London.

I know this area and the flats are very old and as rov1200 said, not as strict when they passed these plans, but surely they should have made them safer years ago with other escape routes.

I suppose there are hundreds more like these around the UK.

I used to live near some flats like these, they reguarly had minor fires (by regularly I mean once a month at least). The fire brigade said the central staircases in these types of flats act like a bellows to the flames and it makes it very difficult to douse them because of this.

C4 News Monday. Reports that there is "anger" at the time it took fire services to attend. Well, heyho, guess what.

Some little ***** started a fire in a stairwell, and now there will be all sorts of claims for compensation against the stupidly inefficient fire brigade. We need to get our fire brigade up to speed. Load of incompetents they are. I hope all the claims succeed and that massive damages are mulcted against Southwark council, the Fire Brigade, the Police (for good measure), and the gumment.

supastar, it's nto a competition.

I think it's tragic, and no doubt it will be down to "youths" who really don't seem to be able to imagine the results of their actions.

Whiffey
Have you ever had any dealings with the Fire Brigade or any idea as to their role in today's society ? I am a retired fireman 25 years service) and take issue very strongly with your comment "Load of incompetents". Unless you are qualified to make statements like this I suggest you "button it". I suggest you visit your local station and ask to spend a few tours of duty with them and see what it's really like. I only hope they haven't seen your post on this site !!

I think you might find that whiffey was being sarcastic fbg40,he was saying that the residents will accuse the fire brigade of being incompetent so that they may claim compensation.
