Is BNP membership a sackable offence?
I was looking through the BNP membership list after it was leaked online and, as well as discovering that the family who live two doors down from me are all members (you really wouldn't have guessed to look at them), I noticed a few teachers, prison officers and servicemen were on the list.
I seem to remember reading that membership of a far right organisation is a sackable offence for police officers? Is that right? And does it apply to other public sector careers like teaching?

As I stated in my first post - the BNP are a legal political party...but like the Nation Of Islam, they are also a supramacist (white) party.
You can be both, and the BNP are.
So it looks like we're in agreement, that BNP party members shouldn't be placed in positions where their political beliefs run counter to their job role.

sp - I don't beleive that membership of any legal political party should stop someone from holding a post in public life. Where will it all end?

Of course membership is not a sackable offence, but in some jobs it would cause the employer to look askance. Membership of the BNP is relatively small, but tacit applause of certain of their views is extremely widespread. It's what's in the mind that counts, not a name on a list.

Dammit...I wanted to look up the BNP's manifesto, but our firewall at work won't let me. When I click on their link, I got:

I actually agree that membership of a political party shouldn't necessarily bar you from gainful employment. However, if your 'secret' is revealed, there are certain positions which would become untenable.
For instance, what would happen to the court system if it were revealed that the judge preciding in (say) a case where a black man had raped a white woman was a member of the BNP?
Sure, if his/her political allegiances are unknown, it's not an issue - but the minute it hits the public domain, it becomes a problem.
The reason why? Because despite your belief that 'the majority' of the public support them...people feel uneasy about extremists of any hue.
Most of us are moderates. If we weren't, the BNP and the Socialist Workers Party would be the biggest movements in the country.

Why are ballots secret even in an advanced democracy?
It's rather odd don't you think, why is it that people don't want other people to know what they think or how they vote? I think it is a complete anachronism, voting should be by a public show of hands, and photographs taken, so any people not voting the correct way can be dealt with accordingly.

Just been looking at the BNP members list. I was not surprised that there were members in the small town (Pop. 31,253) where I live, but I was surprised that of the 10 people who are members (including a Trade Union Official), 5 live on the same road as me.
