I am being treated in a fortnight to a belated birthday present of a visit to a London show/musical.

Wicked & Billy Elliot spring to mind - has anyone been to these, what did they think, would they recommend either of these or another show?

Ive not seen either of those though I do want to see Wicked (Billy Eliot does not appeal)

Lion King and Mary Poppins were great if youve not seen them.

If you can wait then Oliver opens in december!

Can't wait, won't wait!!

I have heard Wicked is excellent though.

Wicked! Intriguing plot. The book from which it was adapted is one of a number by the same author all giving the (other side) of a well-known story. So a musical with a narrative that you don't know before you see it. Much recommended, although we did see it in its opening run with the lead from the original Broadway production. There have been cast changes since.

Billy Elliot - OK but having seen the film, restricting the story to a stage was limiting, and I didn't find the songs as much fun as listening to Marc Bolan on the soundtrack.

Lion King was excellent as were Les Mis and Phantom.

On the other hand I was offered a trip to London for my 60th birthday and a musical of my choice and have decided to go to see The Mousetrap instead!

sorry to confuse u after other comments but i really enjoyed Billy Elliott but not seen wicked xx
Hairspray looks fab....id love to go see that!

I really enjoyed the films of Hairspray & Billy Elliot, so may be disappointed by the musical versions,

I think that's why I may opt for Wicked - don't know the entire plot, it's a new story to me (have the book but have not read it so far) and there is no film version.

any more good ones?

Hairspray every time. Make sure you go when Michael Ball is in it. Also as second choice The Jersey Boys. Fab.
My current top four are, in order:-

Jersey Boys
We Will Rock You
Phantom of the Opera
Billy Elliot

Jersey Boys - fabulous.

Billy Elliot was fab, Lion King was breath-taking, Mary Poppins was great for all the family (but finished??). Phantom, excellent.

I'm sure all the big West End shows should be something special.
I've seen most of the ones that have been mentioned so far, but my favourite has got to be Blood Brothers - absolutely fantastic! I've seen it four times now and have the same reactions each time if not more so.
Question Author
I've always wanted to see Blood Brothers - but doesn't it come across as a bit dated now?
No more than anything else really, it's just set in a different era. It really is fantastic and takes you through the whole range of emotions. Give it a go!
How about Spamalot, the Monty Python musical?
I've seen it three times, once in New York and twice in London and enjoyed it each time. It's very funny with some great songs. Only complaint I would have is that it doesn't last long enough!
Enjoy your trip, whatever you see.
