I would like some advice please.

I use plastic bags as my bin bags for a few reasons. Firstly, as I live on my own so I don't create a lot of waste. Secondly, a bin bag can be put in the outside bin before it starts to stink. Thirdly, I don't need to buy bin bags. Forthly, I recycle nearly everything including fruit and veg waste which goes in the composter. My outside bin normally has only 2-3 bags in it when the refuse collectors empty it.

Does anyone else do this? Should I be buying bin bags due to what may/will be happening to the plastic shopping bag?

Ooops! I meant "life is trivial".
both my mum and i use plastic bags for rubbish and also recycle so dont have a lot of rubbish to put out. in my mums case she also uses plastic bags for putting used cat litter in. i also often take plastic bags into work with me as they are used for putting childrens dirty clothes in to be sent home, i will carry on using plastic bags when needed, and before anyone gets on any high horses about using plastic bags i always use canvas bags for my shopping and have often found some till operators will start packing a plastic bag before i can say i ll use my own.
We are the same in our household, tho' with three of us there is a little more waste even tho' we recycle/compost what we can. We do buy bin bags and really we should get biodegradable ones. I've just googled and there seem to be quite a lot on sale.
hi tiggs, Im the same as you only use them for bin liners or quick transportation of stuff from one place to another but i do hate plastic bags, I only use them cos I end up with loads of them
brown paper bags would be better, like they use in USA for their shopping
yep what a dull little life we have hahaha
Question Author
It says on the Tesco bags that they are 100% degradable.

i sometimes run out of milk as we all do
but even if i only buy a carton of milk he puts it in a carrier
bag!
Hi tigger,

I can vouch that Tesco's carrier bags are degradable.

I once put some cleaning cloths in one and shoved it into the bottom of my airing cupboard.

Completely forgot they were there. Years later, during a house move, I nearly had kittens when I found the bag in bits in the bottom of the airing cupboard. Thought a mouse family was having a field day in there. Then hubby pointed out what had happened - the bag had disintegrated. Phew!

Lol Weeal. Excellent - bring it on. At least they can be recycled. They use them for takeaways but I always get a plastic inner bag with it just in case of leakages.
Question Author
Thats happened to me Chappie. I thought it was mice as well. I have a couple of Sainsburys bags but they only say that they are made from 33% recycleable material and to re-use.

Lol noknowledge!
Tescos bags are degradable but not bio-degradable which means that although they will break down you are still left with the chemicals that make up the bag. They can not be composted. Degradable is just a cheaper way of shouting the green message without the majority of people knowing what it means.
My local supermarket is stopping all carriers in a couple of weeks and your only option is to buy their long lasting bags or bring your own.

I always reuse my carriers, long life, short, whatever, till they are only suitable for bin lining.

When I was told the free bags were ending I left most of those I'd brought with me unused and took a few free ones while I can. Did I feel quilty? Yep. But not for long.

In regard to paper carriers; I have read they are more costly to produce than plastic which is why you dont see many around.
remember these?

I bought one last year and it permanently sits in the kitchen cos i forget to take it with me, it holds LOADS of stuff, I would buy loads of bags and forget to take them to the shops (like Mrs Noknowledge) lol
Question Author
I go shopping every 3 weeks and I usually have 7-8 full bags of shopping. If I get the long lasting ones I would need to get the same amount I reckon. If they completely stop giving out plastic bags I would have to revert back to buying bin liners which are biodegradable and a small bin.
