What was happening today? If it was a preliminary or interim hearing, there will be an additional offence laid under the Bail Act - for which he can be fined or imprisoned. This sounds like the most likely scenario.

If it was the actual trial (and it sounds not as it doesn't sound as if you were there to give evidence, unless your evidence has been agreed - which I would doubt), not only will he have a Bail Act offence to face, but undoubtedly the prosecutor will have applied to prove the case in his absence. Without some sensible evidence as to the reason for his absence, that is likely to have happened and probable that he was convicted.
