Prince William and his girlfriend enjoying a romantic holiday in the Seychelles.
Prince Harry and his girlfriend have just spent three weeks in Botswana at the exclusive Meno a Kwena resort, plus organising pop concerts etc. it must be all go for these two.

Excuse me but aren't these two high flyers supposed to be in the British Army?

It must leave every person who has a family member serving in the hell holes of Iraq & Afghanistan absolutly fuming. I know it does me because I have two gransons currently serving out in Afghanistan who have also served in Iraq and Bosnia. No time for holidays for them because of the quick turn around of these operations. Plus the fact that most of their time out there they are on duty 24/7. All due to the lack of troops.

They will shortly be returning to Britain for a rest & recuperation break of a few days, but what with the travelling time taken off these days, they will not have many left to rest and relax before they are once again back in action.

It is these real soldiers that should be relaxing, with their Wives, Girlfriends and Children, in some exotic resort, all paid for by the M.O.D.

sorry didn't mean to type in altruism, my understanding of the English language isn't that bad, I meant to put in rhetoric
My son is in the Army. He is currently snuggled up asleep on the sofa next to me and will be so for the next couple of weeks.........because he is on leave ! He's not AWOL and, I suspect, neither are William and Harry.
The reason that he is not in a 'hot-spot' is that his particular regiment has not been posted overseas.
Once, and if, he is I sincerely hope that he is nowhere near any H.R.H's ! He might as well wander around with a flashing light on his helmet !!

How do you know, AOG, that MOD are paying for these jollies ?

I believe that you have got several bees in your bonnet and your post has confused them all.

If the real target of your disatisfaction is MOD, you may well have a point, but to point your finger at W & H is not entirely fair.

No you do not have to be 60 plus, just old enough to have some experience of life.

Since you have difficuty with your vision, (which obviously I had no knowledge of) you would not pass a Medical anyway. But that is no excuse not to support those who are medical fit, and are able to fight to defend you.

Why pick on flip-flop when she hasn't even posted on this question yet?

I did not say the MOD was paying for their jollies, but I did not expect anyone to be so foolish as to take my remark literally.

Your son snuggled up asleep next to you on the sofa, and will be so for the next couple of weeks.

He must lead a very shelted life, do his Army chums know about this? Best keep it quiet eh?

Yes i know before you come storming back, who is now taking you literally? But I could not resist.
saying you don't want to be taken literally, are you now oldgit? I guess that's a first step towards admitting you're talking nonsense? Some 'debate' if every time anyone challenges you either say 'I didn't mean it' (or of course just refuse to answer... like a... er... cow)
Gosh is flip_flop female, I keep getting gender wrong, thought a man.
Reason being is that flip has accused me of being young and naive, which I interpret as the implication being when I mature in years, I will mature in sense and put away these silly ideas I have of socialism/feminism/and a commitment to non violence. In fact if you could for a moment believe that other people actually have alternate realities not because they are lacking in life experience but because there are different world views and explanations for human behaviour/endeavour.
I am a mid-30s rugby playing bloke - why do people get my gender mixed up?

Ruby, if you were refering to this Q http://www.theanswerbank.co.uk/News/Question44 1763-3.html I never suggested you were young, in fact, I asked whether you are/were a mature student - because your posts have that studenty ring to them, by which I mean you will use 20 words when 5 will do, you will pepper your posts with various pseudo-intellectual phrases which actually don't mean anything and when somebody disagrees with you you will call them a racist or a misogynist (or whatever the ist of the week is). You appear to want to be AB's arbiter of what is right and wrong and our social conscience, and depsite all the above, I get the impression that all you want to do is stick your fingers in your ears, jump up and down and scream "I'm right and you're wrong, I'm right and you're wrong".

I don't think you are young, quite the opposite in fact, but I do think your answers have the naivety one would expect from youth - including your posts on this very thread (or are you pretending to be old when in fact you are in the sixth form?).
Personally I feel sorry for them.

Ones a ginger and the other will be a slaphead before he's 30.
Can I just say that I thought flip-flop was a lady-person too.

ooh, more personal abuse of anyone who dares disagree... bring it on! sp1814, I think the aggressiveness of people like flipflop and oldgit is definitely male; women are generally less affronted that other people think differently from them (as are many males, of course)
I've just been observing this thread rather than posting on it, because I have absolutely no interest in William/Harry (except to keep note on how rapidly William's hair is thinning - poor git).

I simply don't think they should have to go into the army in the first place.

I would like to see the Army recall James Blunt though...and stick him in the middle of Basra High Street with a tape of 'You're Beautiful' played on a constant loop.

Hold on, where have I been aggressive?

I was minding my own business fantasising about Dannii Minogue and have only posted on this thread because Ruby brought me in to it - were it not for Ruby mentioning me I wouldn't've posted on this thread.

The fact of the matter is, I am right of centre so I can't imagine there will ever be a subject on which ruby and I will agree - I can't stand, I mean really can't stand, ruby's views on just about every subject that I've read her on - but this is absolutely fine and hunky dory because I strongly suspect she feels exactly the same - that is what makes this site (for me) so attractive.

I may disagree with ruby's view, I may also disagree with the way she puts her views across, I may also consider her views to be bananas (I remember when she tried to argue that a white man calling a black man a black ******* is racist and yet a black man calling a white man a white ******* is not - I also in a weird way understood her flawed argument) but that doesn't make them any less valid.

Sorry for assuming that you were Female, flip_flop.
It was the name that threw me, it was the vision of size 4's trotting around in flip flops. Sorry about that, great post all the same.

And no, before anyone accuses me, I do not have a foot fetish.

Back to Bedlam, rather appropriate eh? sp1814.
I can't believe the personal abuse that has been levelled against jno for voicing his/her own opinion on here, especially as jno seems to be one of the most thoughtful and intelligent of AB's membership.

Personally, I believe that when people join the forces they should expect to fight in dreadful conditions if the need arises. That's what they get paid for and what all the perks they get are in aid of. If they can't accept it, then they should not join up. I am sick of hearing whinging from forces families about their loved ones and I don't believe for one minute that the vast majoirty join up for reasons of defending their country.

As for the princes, well I do agree that if they can't carry out their roles because of their vulnerability then they should perhaps not be accepted into the forces. However, whilst royalty exists there will be privileges and I can't get angry about it.
thank you, Lottie. Ruby, keep posting please, I enjoy reading your thoughts. Flipflop, you used phrases like 'pseudo-intellectual', 'all you want to do is jump up and down and scream', 'naivety' for Ruby: these are aggressive terms of personal abuse, not the words you might use if you actually wanted to debate a topic with someone.
here here Loftylottie.

I too am a member of the jno fan club. I will not take up arms or lay down my life to defend the country, but I will not brook any critcism of him.
Well it is a matter of opinion, but I'd describe them not as personal abuse but as adjectives.
ruby27 - forget the jno fanclub. Join mine instead - for 25 a year you get an exclusive t-shirt, fan badge, four posters and a quarterly newsletter.

William/Harry - if they're always going to be 'targetted' by the enemy, then they shouldn't be in the army at all. And when William becomes king, we should all accept that he is Head Of The Armed Forces, purely as a figurehead. We shouldn't expect him or his brother to be like Henry V.

AOG - indeed...indeed.

flip-flop - for me, it was the name rather than any gender-specific posting which lead me to my conclusion that you were a lass. I don't know why I associated 'flip-flop' with women as men wear them too. I'm now examining my attitudes.

jno - we sing pretty much from the same hymn sheet and I admire the fact that you can spell 'naivety'. A word which I avoid unless I have 'Spellchecker' running.

"jno seems to be one of the most thoughtful and intelligent of AB's membership".

That is your opinion LoftyLottie, I think he is an uneducated idiot, and that is my opinion. If he wasn't so aggressive with his answers then perhaps other ABers would enter into a more serious and calmer debate with him. But he seems so hell bent on upsetting people.

It seems obvious to me that you are out of the same mould, judging by your post. "I am sick of hearing whinging from forces families about their loved ones".

"That's what they get paid for and what all the perks they get are in aid of".

Perhaps you would care to inform the rest of us what these perks are?

"I don't believe for one minute that the vast majoirty join up for reasons of defending their country".

No I suppose a person such as you, would find it very hard to believe that there are some people, who consider it to be a vocation, just as nurses and other such professions.

"However, whilst royalty exists there will be privileges and I can't get angry about it".

This seems very strange when you got very angry over the perks that you wrongfully assumed our soldiers received.
