As with the previous thread, why is it called corporal punishment? Also, is it still practiced in many countries?

Also from Latin. This time, from 'corpus', meaning 'the body'. (We get 'corpse' from the same source.) In other words, it means doing physical harm with punishments such as flogging and - in certain Muslim countries, for example - amputation of limbs.
