well, not really a problem as such, but does anyone else see a word, know how it is pronounced - but still thinks of it in the way its spelt - or perhaps the way you read it when you very first came across it...?

for example one of mine is misled ... i always initially read it as my zzuld
also awry - which i think of momentarily as oary

i never say it aloud that way and i know the correct way, but i can't seem to forget those initial split-second thoughts.

any one else have this - or am i a mutant?

there are a few others that i can't think of right now

When I see the American word for colleague - coworker - I invariably internally read it as cow-orker. Why don't these people use hyphens any more? What makes it even worse is the fact that I visualise what a cow-orker might actually do! It's a wonderful verb, 'to ork'.
This one sorts out chemists/physicists from the rest of humanity ( as if such distinction were necessary)

UNIONISED

most people read it as unionised - i.e. formed into a union

scientists see it as un-ionised - i.e. not ionised.
ha ha, I thought it was just me! I do it all the time when reading books and even when I realise the correct pronouncation I still cant change it in my head, particulary happens with the names of people and places!

so no you are not a mutant, whats a mut ant, half dog half ant?????

:-o)
How about 'goal', as in a prison, pronounced 'jail' - not the same thing, but it annoys me like hell.
therapist... especially when it's in a newspaper and the word gets hyphenated after the E at the end of a line... anyway, it just means you're always alert to other possible meanings, which is the sign of a lively mind.
Taichiperson, of the two spellings, 'gaol' and 'jail', the former is the older version of the word and both - as you say - are pronounced identically, so it's really nothing much to complain about.
In the same sort of way, aluminum was around before aluminium, but we still find Brits complaining about the fact that Americans stuck with the original!
After seeing a comedy sketch about the word Restaurant in the late 80s ( I think ) - I now always see the word as

Rest (a) your Aunt
I used to think that the female name "Penelope" rhymed with "envelope".
Reminds me of that sketch with Ronnie Barker, the famous "Four Candles" (Fork Handles)! Terrific!
late entry. My son failed a reading test at the age of 9 because he read 'conscience' as con science. He was ahead of his time!. And i too rhymed Penelope with envelope.. I was also fat - igued. I'm assured urine rhymes with queen but always say it to rhyme with line and notice many other people do, too.
The fatigued one wasn't very clear. I pronouned the the last part to rhyme with glued.

I know what you mean, I know how to pronounce the word epitome (ipitomee) and I know what it means but whenever I read it I want to same epi tome!
My husband jokingly calls the tv show 'Casuality'
as cas u al ity, now I can't see the word properly.
I did the same thing as Stewey! Felt like a dummy when I finally figured out that Penelope is not pronounced "pen-a-lope." Thought that woman(book I was reading) had a weird name. Who names their kid "Pen-a-lope?" LOL.
