They got the culture city award.. Aren't Birmingham and Newcastle/Gateshead more obvious choices? Do you think this is a tactical vote on another agenda and they're hoping for the prestige to rub off on the Pool's ne'erdowell scally communities - or is it just a few bad apples? Anyway, sounds like a good idea; it worked with Glasgow. :-)

Ey Ey Caaaamm Daaan! Well done to the Scousers...I'm sure you're all "Made up" whatever the hell that means.
xyzzy@bok - ignoring the glesga slant (big city, variety within) - what do you mean "another agenda", what might that be? sft42 - I'm well made up, then off to fix ma leccie!
What fooled the judges was that the people of Liverpool were secretly banned from wearing shell suits during the judging. A second factor was that all cars were allowed to retain four wheels during this period. You may have noticed that there has been a reduction in the number of tyre pressure questions on this site recently.
But aren't they just the salt of the earth, always ready with a cheeky quip and so what if their dealings are a bit dodgy.Shouldn't Carla Lane be made a dame for her true to life portrayal of those adorable people. Liverpool culture - a new oxymoron that's right up there with military intelligence. Ulrika - I wish I hadn't been drinking coffee when I read your tyre pressure line - I've had to clean the monitor. Top class.

i just meant brawburd that 'they' [the govt. or whoever] are more desperate to clean up Lpool than to promote euroculture and here is a good springboard; Elsewise, i can't comprehend how they won because their urban developments, their skylines, their culture centres, museums, shopping malls, tourist ease etc do not compare to Brum or Geordieland; unless you want to include the Grafton Rooms, Walton Jail and their 'diesel fit 'er docklands'. Apart from Sixties music, The 'Liverbirds' and the East Lancs Road, which is the exit route - what have Liverpool got to crow about? - really, i'd like to know; educate me.
Sorry to go off track of your question xyzzy, but how nice to hear someone speaking up for Brum, beautiful city of my birth. I seem to spend half my life defending it when I tell people where I originate from!
Congratulations Liverpool, they won it because they deserved to. Liverpool doesn't just have the Beatles and Cilla Black, it also has the Tate, Walker and other galleries, some great contemporary music such as the Coral, excellent classical music, a lively arts scene, wonderful street art and a great buzz. Roll on 2008 and the rejuvenation of a wonderful city.
And culturally, Liverpool knocks seven bells out of Birmingham, which should just be bulldozed.
I think Liverpool was awarded the Culture City status because it has already made vast inroads into the negative aspects of its image, not in the hope that the influx of culture will rub off on the dubious populace. That and the fact that Liverpool has more listed buildings than any city outside London probably helped.
