Are you fed up with the constant pestering of these people on the phone trying to punt you anything from Conservatories to Mobile Phones? I'm sick of it, they always phone at the wrong time!

I have been with them for over 4 years and very rarely get a sales call.
I agree...I did this last year, never thinking it would actually work...and it did.I only get the odd one now...you've won 1000 to do up your kitchen...Oh really..that old chestnut.no thanks!!! I swear these companies think we all have amoebic brain cells or something! LOL
I normally say "I really appreciate your calling, and your call is very important to me, would you mind waiting", flick on some music on my cd, lay the phone near the speakers, and wander off to have a coffee etc. Strangely they've normally hung up when I come back to the phone a short while later, and I don't normally get callbacks from them.
I had a 'phone call from a double glazing firm and the person greeted me like a long lost pal so pleasantries were exchanged. The next fifteen minutes were spent discussing what improvements I'd make if I could. She then asked when a salesman could come round. I said the Council might object so not a good idea. She telt me I'd wasted her time and why hadn't I telt her straight away.I said she hadn't asked so perhaps her script should be re-written and she hung up. End of what could have been a beautiful relationship.......
I had a call recently that told me that I had 'won' a new kitchen ' thank you very much ' - I informed then I would not be paying one penny and I will gladly accept the ktichen this was clearly explained by me in each call - we got to the stage that the 'rep' was coming at 5.00pm and he said we will give you a quote for your kitchen - I told him he was mistaken as I had won the kitchen.. he said forget all those calls they obviously told you the wrong information - he was sooooooooo rude - and he ended the call with - well you must be stupid! and put the phone down. I was deeply offended!!! - does this mean I have not won the competition? :-)
I used to live in a 3-storey "town house" with the lounge on the mid level. One guy who by my invitation turned up to estimate for a conservatory wasn't much amused!
After that I registered with tps and have had very few problems since.

More of a pain is when then phone up with nobody at teh other end, apparently their machines dial lots of numbers and if more calls are answered than they have operators then you're left with a dead phone in your hand with 'number withheld' when you 1471 it.

As people have said try the TPS but before you do i'm sure bt are/were offering a deal where they put you on the TPS and give you free caller ID as well

I called bt, and this is what they said.... join the tps... check! already done that and still getting harrassed with previous owners to the number we've been given by bt. well madam, we can block withheld calls and that will cost 12 a quarter, how do they get this number? I asked, we've only just moved here and this is the new number given to us by bt (we had to wait 1 month for connection) and the answer was...... we sell on old numbers after 6 months and, as I was told, it will cost me money to block the withheld no's to the number we've just paid 75 for! that bt sold on to cold calling companys!!!!! aaarrrgghhhh!!!!

And how about those Indian and Pakistani call centres? They phone you up, With an almost incoherant grasp of english, trying to sell something, you tell them you're not interested, and still they jabber on! Eventually you put the phone down on them, but they come back later on about the same thing! And the rude ones, I take a note of who they're supposed to represent, and give them an earful back!

78 - Inever thought I would agree with you but that is one thing that really gets on my t1ts.I am so not racist as you know but Scottish accents do not equate with Indian or Pakistani accents.I speak to them as though they are stupid - which they are not and they call me by my first name preceded by Ms.In which country is the surname first followed by first name?I know there are countries who do this.AOL or Ebay or PP ( cant remember now) have a centre in India and another in Dublin - I so love getting the Irish voice!

Just to finish off I am always polite with those callers as it could be my son or daughter just trying to earn a bit extra.I usually say the house is on the market - however they are invariably very rude.

i just say, hold on someone at the door , and leave receiver on the floor until they get fed up waiting

I have got call display now and as soon as I see INT as the call I pick up the receiver and put it straight back down. I also do this with withheld nos. so anyone calling here has to ring via mobile or normal landline! How many mobile phones have you won from India? when I had my no. on divert to my mobile the code came up as 008 701 and apparently thats satelite mobile or Inmarsat........

i found the best way to get rid of them is ask them questions like do you clean your teeth, what toothpaste do you use, why do you use that tooth paste? i was getting at least one call a week from scottish power byt since ive been questioning them they dont seem to phone.

We registered with TPS a couple of years ago & didn't have any further problems until recently. We've just started getting a few 'automated' sales phone calls, but we immediately put the phone down.

We've done 1471 after them, but there's never a telephone number available to report to TPS though.

i get one of my kids to scream and i shout i've got to go get of the line i need to phone an amberlance that usually works

My parents have registered with tps as have I. They are inundated with sales calls and in fact when i was round there a couple of weeks ago they had 7 phone calls in one day! I have caller ID on my phone and i kept getting someone phoning me and it said out of area on the phone when they rang so i never answered for ages. Then one say i thought id answer just out of curiosity and some "foreign" man said to me "oh you do answer your phone then!" I asked who he was and he told me I could have a free mobile phone if i wanted. I said what so you can phone me on there too? and put the phone down. I have since had 5 calls of the same nature, so i now refuse to answer the out of area phone calls.

i often let them waffle on for a while - if i am not busy - and then when they get to the bit about wanting my credit card details i obviously refuse, they usually get a bit mardy.

I was busy once and i said i am not interested but he continued with his script, and every question i asked he would pause, take a deep breath and then continue where he left off. i put the phone down and he phoned back 8 times in a row - i let it ring and ring.

i hate the way they try to bully you and act like you are stupid if you don't want their offer.

i also sometimes ask them to send the details in a brochure or ask for their website or something, but they wont

none of the above is a sly dig at anyone - just to be clear...

I just say the correct Mr X they want has just died and how insensitive they are whilst the undertakers are still taking the body away. Then pretend to cry.
If you can be bothered say you're very busy at the moment but would like to call them back. Ask them for their name & home number. When they protest say now you know how I feel and hang up.
Smudge. Just noticed your post on here. I too am TPS registered but we do get a lot of those automated calls. Apparently they come from India or other overseas places and TPS does not cover this at present, although I was told that it was in the offing.
