Very easy to throw accusations of blame around with the power of hindsight. The evidence is certainly damning, but probably not enough for him to have been locked up. Perhaps a long term instatution would've been better, but still it seems that the guy was an accident waiting to happen.

I hope newjudge will be along to explain the legal differences in the two charges.

I'm not sure, but I believe 'murder' must involve premeditated, whereas 'manslaughter' involves causing death with mitigating circumstances, in this case, a diagnosed mental illness.

As I say, hopefully our legal eagle will explain all.

I don't see how he can be not guilty of murder but guilty of attempted murder. It seems inconsistent.

If his state of mind was such that he intended to murder people by running them down with a van how was it so different an hour or so previously?

Well perhaps you two should stop polishing each others Aprils and have a go at the actual post. The authorities had plenty of chances to put the savage in a secure institution and chose not to. Result 3 innocents dead. Ok over to AH/RH, the floor is yours.
