Edwina Izzard?

Romus: "Perhaps we should have a referendum. If more than 50% don't want them, then they're gone." - yep that would solve it and no one would ever moan about it again....hang on!

dave: // as previously stated and as demonstrated in numerous countries a president can be a figurehead WITHOUT political powers.//

This is evading the issue by abstracting it.  It has to be someone . What about - Representing the United Kingdom & Commonwealth on the World stage, Madam President, Yvette Cooper?

I think we'd be better sticking with King Charles II, who knows how to behave, and doesn't scare the horses.

God 'elp us!  The very idea!  Ghastly woman!

I get the blob, on Safari.

I am happy with the Monarchy as it is.

Mr William Windsor

What if Charles had decided - as was his right - that he didn't really want to be a reigning monarch and we now have King Andrew?

We wouldn't have King Andrew.  We'd have King William.  Andrew is way down the list.

OK - but the point is we are only a heartbeat way from someone totally unsuitable & with no option to depose them.

There are seven people ahead of Andrew in the line of succession.  Hardly a heartbeat.

Douglas 22.30 for Best answer...split my sides laughing at that one .🤣🤣lol

It doesn't have to be someone. Government already exists and effectively rules. A figurehead is only there to greet other figureheads, so that should be able to be dispensed with easily enough.

I suppose the UK would have Kin Boris on the throne. if he had had his way.

"they could end up with a President Starmer or God forbid, Rayner, - or even Corbin! "

... for a few short years and subject to democratic accountability. i'd even take president boris if it meant getting rid of hereditary monarchy.

Ireland manages quite well with a figurehead of state who is pretty uncontroversial - admittedly it wasn't always like that with that old snake de Valera.
Leave well alone I say: there may be issues - but who has a perfect family? It never has been and never will be and I can't think of a good enough reason to change it at the moment. Certainly no one here has come up with anything. Suggesting A or B is pointless as they won't be around forever. And they bring in the tourists feed the tabloids. It's like that episode of Dads Army when it looks like the ancient Pte Godfrey might be pensioned off: until they realise he's the one who makes the tea.

"I think we'd be better sticking with King Charles II, who knows how to behave, and doesn't scare the horses."

Now THAT'S the king of wishful thinking.

//Those lefties wishing to abolish the instutution of the monarchy//

What about me, or do you think I am a lefty?

The argument about 'President Starmer' or whoever is rather moot given we would be able to vote them out. Unlike the RF who we are stuck with.

What about President Farage? Nice ring to it!

Charles only wanted to be King of The United Kingdom.

Boris told his sister Rachel when he was a lad that he wanted to be King of the World when he was a grown up. He never achieved either .

And I said I wanted to win The Tour de France, me too.
