Ukraine’s Victory Is Closer Than Ever
Superb, upbeat article in today's Telegraph which closes;
Russia seems to be in the grip of a mass psychosis – a regression to a mythical past that increasingly collides with the reality of violent death on an industrial scale. Few return from the killing fields of Ukraine to tell the tale, but defeat on the battlefield is an incontrovertible argument.
If the Russians cannot hold the line in Zaporizhzhia, they could well suffer a rout – as happened last year near Kharkiv. This time, however, the Ukrainians are far better prepared to exploit a localised collapse to drive a wedge between Russian occupiers in Donetsk to the east and the Black Sea coast, including Crimea, to the south.
The war seems to be approaching the point that the First World War reached on August 8, 1918. This has gone down in history in General Ludendorff’s phrase as “the black day of the German Army” – the day the Allied tanks broke through at Amiens and began a 100-day campaign that ended the war.
Ukraine has the tanks, it has the men and it has Zelensky too. This battle-hardened but by no means war-weary people, its national identity forged in adversity, is fighting to liberate all of its land – Crimea included.
With or without Western support and sanctions, Ukraine will fight on until Putin’s evil empire is defeated.

There’s been a long standing issue with defence ministry procurement. Reznikov (outgoing minister) offered to resign over it but called on a journalist involved in the allegations to resign himself if the stories proved unfounded.
So finally Reznikov has resigned/been dismissed.
Interestingly the Verkhovna Rada as per the constitution must first accept Reznikov’s resignation letter and then vote on his nominated replacement Rustem Umerov (unfortunate second name but as he’s of Crimean Tartar background probably only a coincidence)

Total U.S. combat casualties in the war against Japan were thus 111,606 dead or missing and another 253,142 wounded. Japanese military casualties from 1937-1945 have been estimated at 1,834,000, of which 1,740,000 were killed or missing.
Nowhere near Russian casualties 1941-45 - around 25 000 000 ( yes million)

Fascinatingly, military expert Thomas Theiner postulates that Ukraine deliberately attacks the most difficult parts of the Russians defences specifically to draw the Russians in attritionally. Interesting way if true to compensate for shortages in other areas.
For him the key targets are the Azov Sea naturally but also northern Crimea (to Dzhankoi). Because he reckons Russians must be prevented from escaping to southern Crimea.
Meanwhile Bakhmut continues to be a holding operation: for reasons best known to themselves Russia clings to this “gain”at all costs. So Ukraine just says “thank you very much” and keeps them there.
