The Conservatives are choosing their candidate to fight the London Mayoral Elections and the race is proving interesting.
The frontrunner who is Minister for London was rebuffed. And a man who had not announced he was standing was pur through. All very odd.

I suspect some senior Tories are very keen on dragging the party away from any stance the public wants and more in line with Civil Service plans. The aim is likely to be to put their choice in place.
Are local mayors really necessary?
my guess is they want to field someone with as little connection as possible to the current UK government, so a KC nobody's heard of might be a wise choice (unless of course he's useless).
the only thing missing is a picture of a wombat ( big hairything in the meerkat advert)
Local Mayors
andy burnham has done a general good job
//MP for Sutton and Cheam vowed to fight Labour mayor Mr Khan’s decision to expand the ultra low emission zone (Ulez) scheme and pledged to build more housing.//

Paul Scully is an MP in the ward where I live. He was a reasonably good campaigner and fought for the refurbishment of our local St Helier Hospital. He would of got my vote in the mayoral election solely for above reason. I believe any Tory candidate would, I hope, oppose Khan's ULEZ scheme.
Why on earth did they not nominate Boris? Obvious choice to me and they would have got rid of him as an MP even before he jumped. With his campaign againt Khan he would have won more votes from those who oppose his plans.
Boris has already held the job. He blew £50m-odd on a garden bridge that never even got off the ground, so to speak. People remember waste on that scale.
London becomes, increasingly, a foreign country to me and very many people I know. It is all very odd - but then everything seems to be. How come S.Khan hasn't been thrown out? for instance. It's a great shame. I'd love to have a day or 2 looking around galleries etc. but the last time I was there (2013) I felt like an alien.
jourdain. Do you feel like an alien because times change and there are more foreigners with darker skin tones present? Is that why you dislike Sadiq Khan?
That's rather presumptuous, Atheist. Please remember that I spent 30 years teaching, very successfully, in Comprehensive schools in Bradford amongst others. I was also a successful Athletics coach. My eyes lit up when a Caribbean-type lad or lass turned up! You have almost called me a racist and I object to that most strongly. Believe me when I say that an aversion to skin colour would not have enabled me to work!

No - it's the rushing around, the carelessness of others amongst other things. The isolation, the 'me, me, me' and, above that, the shallowness, the disconnection with what I know to be 'normal' life .

jourdain. I asked you a question. I didn't accuse you of anything. I realise that here a question can be mistaken for an accusation. I don't hide accusations inside questions.
I apologise for a clumsy question.
And of course I don't remember "that I spent 30 years teaching, very successfully, in Comprehensive schools in Bradford amongst others. I was also a successful Athletics coach. My eyes lit up when a Caribbean-type lad or lass turned up!"
How could I?
Understood, Atheist. :)
