Local Elections Turnout

The turnout for my local council was a pathetic 26.14%. Did your council do better?

What like was the turnout for your previous council election?

A not much better 29%. I don't know if folk decided to make the most of the bank holiday and go on holiday last minute or have just given up.

I've just given up. It was pretty obvious that North Norfolk would remain LibDem. I voted Lib Dem for years because of the superb Norman Lamb. But then he left and the Lib Dem party went completely downhill and conservatives were the only option. I now just don't vote. And I won't vote in the next General Election unless by some miracle the Tories get a strong leader.

I don't think you are the only one with that attitude, MissT.
There was a big scandal with my Council a few months ago, blown up again last week causing a lot of resentment and anger, but they have all kept their seats.

For many years I worked at both local and general elections, starting as a clerk and working my way up to presiding officer.
At one local election my co-worker and I were so bored we worked out the turnout - it was 14%!

Seems to be about 40/45% turnout for NNDC. Our ward was 28%. And was won by an independent. There's not many of us! No public transport!

Those who rely on buses could have voted by post, though. You don't need buses in that Norfolk, it's flat enough to walk or roller skate :D or use your tractor

Ha ha North Norfolk is far from flat Barry. We actually live in a valley But I admit some areas are flat though like Fenland Most of Breckland or the Yarmouth area. We have rolling countryside around us! Anyway my walking days are over ;0).

Wolverhampton turn out was just less than 25%.

Makes me wonder how many people think local elections are important or why Starmer thinks the people are turning into labour supporters. To be honest does anyone think there will be much difference in how their councils are run whoever is elected.

Before I moved to Norfolk from north London I worked as a poll clerk for local elections and a lot of people were telling us they were voting to get rid of Maggy Thatcher - no matter how many times we told them it was not a general election.

I've is often said that people vote to get rid of the current government Rather than the other main party. And it has always happened in local elections.

Actually for most people more important than the General elections as decisions affect them directly. If you want ULEZ, traffic chaos and expensive parking or no parking vote Green or Lib Dem. If you want to have a broke council vote Labour.

Possibly ymf. But in rural areas like ours it nothing ever changes. No car parks, no pavements no street lights, no nuffin. Except bins emptied. We don't even have a Parish Council.
