... would you sooner see NGOs and charity groups pack their traps and leave Afghanistan rather than see women working for them?
They might think the hunger and illness which could follow is a small price to pay to protect the virtue of Afghan womanhood.

I can't look at it from the very distant past as they do but at some point I'd have to stop banging my head on a pile of rubble and just walk away.

I think trying to put yourself into the mindset of anyone anywhere, is virtually impossible, but to attempt it with someone whose upbringing and attitudes are so fundamentally (!) different from mine, would be beyond my very best efforts at understanding.
