//More than 200 police officers using dogs, thermal imaging cameras and drones are continuing their search for a missing baby as fears mount the infant might have come to harm.

The parents, Constance Marten and Mark Gordon, were arrested in Brighton on Tuesday on suspicion of gross negligence manslaughter.

They had been missing for 53 days.

A search for them began when their car was found on fire near Bolton. Police say Ms Marten had recently given birth.

Police said the baby may have been born in the back of the vehicle, without a midwife or medical attention.

Ms Marten, 35, and Gordon - a convicted rapist and registered sex offender - were held on Monday after a member of the public saw them and called the police.

They were initially held on suspicion of child neglect, but were further arrested on suspicion of gross negligence manslaughter.//

This is a bizarre case that I've been following for a while - she the product of a very wealthy family, he a convicted criminal. Since the couple appear to have travelled fairly widely around the country and are not willing to reveal the whereabouts of the baby, the police have a mammoth task on their hands. I doubt very much that it will end well.

I'm hoping they have left the baby with someone who is looking after it.
I'm not optimistic. If someone has it they must be aware of all the searching that's gong on.
Why so much police involvement? I was astounded at the number of vehicles and police officers - bet the criminals in that area were having a field day. Were they actually being sought for a crime? I can understand wanting to know what happened to the baby but why have they been arrested?
Yes, this is a bizarre case and so very sad on all counts. What a shame we can’t “torture” the truth out of these people! It must be so frustrating for the interviewing officers and difficult for all those desperately searching for the baby. However as the couple dumped the pushchair some time ago it’s not looking very hopeful.
very sad for the baby.. suspect she is a victim of coercive control ?
Lankeela - they have been arrested on charges og neglect of the baby and - I think - manslaughter. There is no doubt there was a baby in early Jan and now the baby is missing.

Gross negligence manslaughter
I've been following this case as well. Shocked to see they were arrested in my area. Not much, if any hope that poor baby is still alive and I can't bear to think he/she suffered. Heartbreaking.

Given that they have apparently been sleeping rough for the last 6 or so weeks it doesn't look good. Hopefully one of them will crack / show some compassion and say what happened.
This is indeed a very odd case. If they had been found and the baby was with them and healthy, would they have been arrested? If so, for what?

A black man and white woman with a baby are pretty conspicuous, so how can they not have been spotted in the nearly 8 weeks up to now? If they were camping for some of the time, where were they eating/getting food from? And what were they doing in the evenings - in January it's dark at 4:30pm.

I hope the Sussex Police are better at looking than the Lancashire Police.
It won't be him I'd bet.
Poor innocent baby.

What an ignorant comment. Armchair detectives are the worst.

Sadly I doubt this will end well. If the infant is no more it will be worse than a needle in a haystack.

I'm not doing any detecting from my armchair, just pointing out some things about this sad case.
Hmmm.
Our local paper has a police officer giving the latest account but nothing seems to have changed.

They dumped the pushchair in East London in early January so I assume the baby hasn't been with them for almost two months.

// they were no longer in possession of the pushchair that they were previously seen with after they dumped it in Flower and Dean Walk, E1, at 11.46pm on January 7.//

I thought they didn't have the baby before they got to Brighton but I must be wrong or they wouldn't now be searching for him/her. Am I wrong and they did have the baby when they arrived in Brighton?

Don't know. They dumped the pram a couple of months ago.
Perhaps they have given the baby away to someone who has paid her to be a surrogate? The least bad scenario in my opinion.
